Presque Isle, ME, January 9, 2018– One year ago, an association of Aroostook County’s larger businesses was formed to create the Aroostook Energy Association (AEA).  Driven by a common desire to influence lower energy costs for commercial customers, the AEA was established to work collaboratively with energy suppliers, energy distributors and regulatory agencies to build a cost-effective energy future for Northern Maine.

AEA’s mission is to engage and collaborate with energy providers, creating relationships that provide sustainable costs to our membership and the greater region. The AEA represents seven major industrial- and service-electrical users whose aggregated electrical load represents approximately 25% of Northern Maine’s total load. This is the first time that an Aroostook County group has organized to provide representation on a broad spectrum of energy matters.

Since its inception, the AEA has been focused on working with Emera Maine to revise and extend its capital expenditure plans, thus reducing projected transmission costs to Northern Maine customers. Further, AEA members have presented before the Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) on the utility’s last rate distribution case that likely resulted in a positive settlement for Northern Maine.

The AEA’s membership currently includes, Cary Medical Center, Huber Engineered Woods, LLC, Irving Forest Products, Inc., Katahdin Forest Products, Daaquam Lumber Maine Inc., Maine Woods Company, LLC, McCain Foods USA, Pineland Farms Potato Co. Inc., Portage Wood Products, LLC, and ReEnergy Ashland and Fort Fairfield.

Serving as the AEA’s Board of Directors are: Chris “Kip” Nichols, President, Shawn Anderson, Vice-President, Shawn Lovley, Secretary/Treasurer, Brad Wolverton, Arkon Horne, David McKenney, and Mark Thibodeau. Donald Tardie serves as consultant to the Board of Directors.
